Child, teen and dependent accounts

Can my child get their own online account?

Children and dependents ages 12 and older can create their own online account. To set up an account, they will need the following:

  • Their first and last name
  • Street address
  • Date of birth
  • Sharp Health Plan member ID#
  • A valid email address

Children under age 12 do not need an online account. Their health information can be accessed in the adult subscriber’s online account. When your child turns 12, the subscriber’s access to the child’s information will expire. Your child may create their own online account at that time.

Why will I lose access to my child’s information when they turn 12 years old?

In most cases in California, minors aged 12 and older have the right to consent and confidentiality for their own health care. They may also discuss their health with their provider in private, without a parent or guardian present.

How do I access my child’s online account?

Children under age 12: Their health information can be accessed in the adult subscriber’s online account. The subscriber is the main person listed on your plan policy.

If you are not the subscriber for your child’s plan policy, you may complete a Request access to a child's account form to ask for access to your child’s health information. You’ll need to verify that you are the child’s parent or legal guardian. Our Customer Care team will review your request and get back to you within three business days.

Children and dependents ages 12 and older: They have to give you legal permission to access their health information. To share access with you, your child or dependent must:

  • Be age 12 or older
  • Have their own Sharp Health Plan online account

What you, as the parent or guardian, need to do:

  • Give your email address to your child or dependent
  • Send them the instructions below

How do I make changes on behalf of my child, teen or dependent?

You need access to their online account to act on their behalf. This includes:

  • Changing their primary care physician
  • View, print or request their member ID card
  • Send messages to Customer Care
  • See all their health plan information, including their coverage documents, health care spending, claims and past payments
  • Pay health plan premium bills, if applicable
  • Update their contact information
  • Set their communication preferences, and more

Here’s what to do if you don’t already have access to your child, teen or dependent’s account.

If your child is under age 12: You have to complete a Request access to a child's account form first. This allows us to verify that you are their parent or legal guardian. After you get access, you can make changes on their behalf.

If your teen or dependent is age 12 and older: Your teen or dependent must share their online account with you first. Then you can make changes on their behalf.

Non-member access

I don’t have Sharp Health Plan coverage but provide assistance to someone who does. Can I access their online account?

The person you assist must authorize you to access their online account and health information. This means they need to take action first.

The member has to contact Customer Care and request a “proxy account” to be sent to your email address. Then, you will receive an email invitation with an activation code. Use the activation code to set up an account to gain access to the member’s online account.
